The countries of the South Eastern European (SEE) region have experienced important social, political and economic challenges during the last 20 years. These challenges have also had an effect on public health care systems, including blood transfusion services. Recognising the need to support the region in further fostering the key elements of a Blood Quality Management System (B-QM), the EDQM’s B-QM Working Group has conducted a training on Quality Management to meet the needs of blood establishments in this region.

The training took place from 27 to 30 September in Skopje (FYROM). It comprised a series of lectures and practical exercises conducted by European experts from the Red Cross of Finland and Flanders (Belgium), a Regional Blood Transfusion Center (Romania), the Maltese National Blood Transfusion Service and the EDQM. The course aimed at raising awareness on QM standards and supporting blood establishments in the implementation of European legislation and the Council of Europe’s Guide to the Preparation, Use and Quality Assurance of Blood Components.

The course was organised by the EDQM, hosted by the Institute of Transfusion Medicine of Skopje, and co-funded by the EDQM/Council of Europe and the European Union. It was attended by 27 specialists in transfusion medicine from the SEE region.
